Project description

Frontwind is a multi-tenant collaborative wind farm management solution, capable of scouting new wind farm areas, strategically positioning wind turbines, configuring their operation modes and performing a vast range of appraisal simulations like energy yield, acoustic emissions, casting of shadow, general site suitability and risk of icing.

A central component of the platform is its GIS-driven mapping layer, that enables the user to perform detailed spatial planning, visualize environmental constraints, and optimize placement of wind turbines.

Eco-friendly energy is one of the defining topics of the modern world. In the same spirit, the portal uses modern technology like passkey-based user authentication, real-time updates and targeted user notification for longer running tasks, like simulations.

Beyond pure development, we also have audited the solution architecture and implementation, set up CI/CD pipeline, increased automated test coverage, and assessed user interface and frontend integration.

Challenges

One of the fun challenges we faced was learning about the domain of wind energy. Getting to know how wind turbines are manufactured and configured, which regulations exist and how geography affects performance has been very interesting. Very applicable here: the more you learn, the more you realize how much you don't know. So the learning continues.

Another particularly interesting aspect was dealing with geodata, including the different coordinate systems and maps. Geodata is an exciting challenge on all fronts - backend, frontend and UI/UX, because it makes you think about how to keep data storage under control, processing fast, UI streamlined and intuitive.
