Microfold

Microfold is a Python package we developed and maintain that supports the simulation, analysis, and visualization of folding patterns in elastomers for the Microfold research project at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Project description

Microfold is a fundamental research project by Forschungszentrum Jülich focused on studying folding patterns in elastomers with varying physical properties such as stiffness, dimensions, and top-layer patterns. The project aims to better understand how these materials behave under different conditions.

We developed a Python package that supports the entire research workflow. The software provides tools for configuring, processing, analyzing, and visualizing in silico experiments, as well as optimizing and running finite element simulations.

What we liked

We enjoyed working on Microfold because it combined scientific curiosity with complex technical challenges. It’s not every day you get to develop tools that help scientists understand the behavior of materials at such a fundamental level.

One of the most interesting aspects was creating a system flexible enough to handle a wide range of simulation parameters while still delivering reliable and efficient results. Supporting the team’s needs for both high computational performance and clear visualizations kept us on our toes and made the project deeply rewarding.
